Welcome to The Diploma Course in our Sewing Studio.

Design and create a capsule wardrobe with this year long course. Gain in confidence learning to make the clothes you really want to wear.

Applications are now open

Our next course date is October 2024.

Our Diploma Course, led by Jules Fallon, covers designing for your own body shape and lifestyle, pattern cutting for individual figure shapes, production sewing techniques, tailoring and textile manipulation. All the skills you need to design and create your own capsule wardrobe.

The year long course is a commitment, and probably not for everyone as it will require some soul searching and working outside of your comfort zone. But you will gain so much more from this course than just sewing knowledge.

How is our Course structured?

Although you will be making up 6 garments in your capsule wardrobe, the course is made up of 5 Units. These cover a range of knowledge and skills that build on each other. Each unit needs to be passed to be able to move onto the next.

Pattern cutting / dressmaking sewing workshop

1. Design

...

Learn how to take ideas and turn them into the kinds of garments you want to wear. We will cover a range of techniques to help you whittle down your ideas to decide on the colours and styles that suit you and your lifestyle.

You will create a moodboard to help you focus your ideas and use a sketchbook to collate all your thoughts, fabric swatches and design ideas. You will also learn about presentation methods to showcase your final capsule wardrobe designs.

2. Working with wovens

...

Most garments are made with woven fabrics so it’s important to understand the processes that work best with these types of fabrics.

Creating a set of resources for both Sewing and Pattern Cutting will help you make better choices when making up your garment ideas. You will also create a set of basic blocks to help you if you choose to draft your own garment ideas. But you can also opt to adapt and alter commercial patterns to fit you.

3. Fabric manipulation

...

As well as making garments we will be looking at how fabric can be manipulated to enhance and add decoration to particular designs and shapes.

This may involve a visit to the V&A or other relevant exhibitions or shows (circumstances permitting). You will also have the opportunity to experiment with some printing and dyeing techniques as well as stitched decorative techniques to create some fabric manipulation samples. These can be further developed into ideas to include in some of your final garments.

4. Working with knits

...

A large part of your wardrobe will probably contain knit or stretch fabric clothing. These types of fabrics need to be handled and sewn in particular ways to make the most of their qualities.

You will learn to draft a basic jersey blocks that you may choose to develop into items of leisurewear. You will also learn about the most appropriate sewing techniques and processes, interlinings and tapes to help you achieve more professional results when working with this kind of fabric.

5. Tailoring

...

This unit covers the techniques and processes used to get a more 'tailored' or professional finish to your garments.

During this unit you will draft either a basic overgarment block or a trouser block and you may choose to develop this into a garment of your choice. But again you may opt to work with a commercial pattern and adapt this to fit you better. You will learn how to draft patterns for pockets and collars and how to achieve a high quality finish when creating them within your garments.

What commitment is required?

Learners will need to be available for tuition 2 days a month in the studio, as well as regular online tutorials for additional support. You will also be expected to spend approximately 8 hrs per week working at home.
