Upholstery Workshop - Footstool

£199.00

Loading...

Come and join us for this wonderful introduction into the world of upholstery. This course is perfect for complete beginners. In the space of a day you will create a beautiful footstool that you can put your feet up on and relax in style - assuming your pet hasn't pinched it as a glamorous bed first!

The day will start with a discussion about the selection of upholstery fabrics - fire retardancy, fire regulations and the Martindale rub test.  You will then share your fabric choices and possible varnish, wax and decorative tack choices effectively planning the overall appearance of your footstool. The tutor is also happy to discuss supplier details should you wish to make more after the workshop has ended.

You will have the opportunity to varnish or wax the footstool feet which are untreated.

Next, you will be guided through the process of upholstering a solid base employing a mix of modern and traditional upholstery techniques, shaping foam, using calico, adding polyester wadding and then covering with your chosen upholstery grade fabric. Followed by adding a choice of decorative brass or coloured upholstery nails around the corners

Finish size of footstool: Height 10" x  Width 10" x Length 16"

All the materials required will be included excluding the top fabric, which you will need to source ahead of the workshop as we don't currently stock upholstery fabrics in the  Sew Me Something shop.

What you need to bring

  • Your upholstery grade top fabric. You will need 1m if using a patterned fabric or 1/2m if using a plain fabric (Please do not bring Velvet)
  • An Apron to protect your clothes from varnish and wax
  • It is also advisable to not wear a wool or knitted tops as the tacks can snag on the fabric and get dislodged.

*Please note, upholstery can be quite a physical activity, you will need to be able to use a staple gun, hammer and tacks.

*We will be providing legs that come with a dowel screw and a ply base that has a t-nut ready in the base for easy attachment.  This will allow for more leg options and an easier finish on the corners, along with no stapling along the edge of the base only on the bottom.  There is also the option to use Queen Ann Legs but this requires a greater level of skill and may not be an ideal option if you have never done upholstery before.  We will ask you to select which leg style you wish to use and pre order them ahead of the workshop.
